Why

Keep your trademark or design unique and do not let others profit from it. As a proprietor, you have to take active action yourself, because authorities (unfortunately) do not.

How

Sending a summon letter, filing opposition, negotiate co-existence (agreements), conducting legal proceedings.

If necessary, you bite the bullet. It took blood, sweat and tears to invent, design, produce, launch and protect a brand or model. The last thing you want, of course, is for copycats to steal it. If that does happen and your trademark or design is copied - either consciously or unconsciously - it is wise to put a stop to it. That can be done with a cease and desist letter. But sometimes it can also be interesting to give someone else permission to use your trademark or design under certain conditions. So that you can earn even more by issuing a licensing contract.
